Yet another club is throwing itself into the race for Swedish super striker Viktor Gyökeres who, according to statistics from the CIES Football Observatory, is the one who scored the most in 2024.

The Sporting CP striker has been linked with several giants after impressing in Lisbon.

As a result of his impressive performances, the Swedish international has attracted interest from several clubs with Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal at the top of the list.

And given their lack of goalscoring threat in recent months, Arsenal’s fans are certainly open to the idea of a player of Gyökere’s quality joining the club.

However, The Athletic’s David Ornstein explained how the Gunners don’t prioritize a transfer for the player when talking to Sky Sports.

“The Sesko, I think, is an option for the summer,” he said. “After that, you look at different profiles like Gyökeres and players like that, but I don’t think there’s one that Arsenal have prioritized for the style, and I don’t think Viktor Gyökeres prioritizes Arsenal either.”

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle United have thrown themselves in, they write that it has to do with the future of Alexander Isak at the club, while the BBC reports that a duo with the two would change the entire landscape of football in Europe. The two are already teammates on the Swedish national team.

At the same time, a sale of Alexander Isak will bring in huge sums far above the buyout clause of Viktor Gyökeres. TEAMtalk reports that the bidding for Isak is likely to start at £115 million, which will be a British (and Swedish) record.

Liverpool are described as the “most persistent suitors” regarding the Newcastle striker, who has scored 17 goals in 24 appearances for the Magpies this season. The Swede’s current Newcastle contract is set to run until June 2028, and he is valued at around £63.4 million by Transfermarkt.

As for Gyökeres, he is under contract with Sporting until June 2028 and has a release clause of £83.16 million according to BBC Sport.

The 488th CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post presents the 100 players who have scored the most goals in official club or national team matches (senior, U23 or U21) in the last year. Sporting CP’s Swede Viktor Gyökeres is clearly at the top of the list with no less than 64 goals: 54 for his club and 10 at national team level.

Erling Braut Haaland (Manchester City and Norway) and Harry Kane (Bayern Munich and England) complete the podium with 52 and 47 goals respectively. In terms of goal frequency, the top three are Irishman Garbhan Coughlan of Cashmere Technical in New Zealand (one goal every 43 minutes), Japanese Tomoyuki Doi of Geylang United in Singapore and Uruguay’s Martín Cauteruccio of Sporting Cristal in Peru.

Posten also presents the rankings for the last two and three years. Over the last two years, no one has scored more goals than Erling Haaland (101), while Kylian Mbappé tops the last three-year list with 147 goals. The youngest player in last year’s top 100 is the Spaniard Chupete (Atlético Malagueño), while the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo (Al-Nassr and Portugal) is the oldest.
