Leo Hjelde was supposed to get his games in the world’s toughest league with the promotion to Sunderland before last season, but there were none in the first part, in February he was loaned out to Sheffield United (has two Premier League games for Leeds 2021/22). Now the 22-year-old is leaving the ball island.
On paper, it will be a step back on Hjelde, but for the player that Celtic in 2020/21 called the “next Van Dijk”, the move to KV Mechelin and the Belgian top division could provide good working conditions.

The Belgian club confirms Hjelde has been given a contract until 2029 and with an option for another season.
“Hjelde is our first defensive signing in the summer window. I’m sure Leo has the qualities to be a win for our team. He already has a lot of experience, says sporting director Tom Caluwé to the club’s website.
