Aston Villa have opened talks with Borussia Mönchengladbach about a potential transfer for goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas, and contact between the clubs has already been established.
The Europa League champions are scheduled to pursue the 28-year-old German as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options before next season.

Nicolas, who is a formidable 196 centimetres tall, has emerged as a strong target for Unai Emery’s team. Sources indicate that the player is very excited about a possible move to Villa Park, and he sees it as a significant step in his career.
Villa will have to trigger the goalkeeper’s €15 million buyout clause in full, as Premier League clubs are ineligible for any negotiated discounts that could have applied to domestic or lower-level stakeholders.
Despite the fixed sum, the Midlands club consider this good value for an established Bundesliga player.
Gladbach’s first-choice goalkeeper had an impressive season, starting all 34 Bundesliga games. He recorded 136 saves and 13 games without conceding, while also conceding 53 goals. This shows stability and rescue ability under pressure.
Nicolas has developed steadily at Mönchengladbach since his arrival in 2016, and loan spells have helped to hone his game. His commanding presence, good passing and speed have attracted interest from several European clubs, but Villa are currently at the forefront of negotiations.
Villa push to sign Bundesliga goalkeeper while Martinez’s future is uncertain
For Villa, the signing of Nicolas will provide reliable cover and competition for established goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, whose future is uncertain.
As previously reported, Liverpool have shown tentative interest in Martínez as they prepare for a possible sale of Alisson Becker – even as they fight to keep their own first-choice goalkeeper.
The 33-year-old Argentine remains a formidable figure, yet the addition of a younger, ambitious goalkeeper fits well with the club’s strategy of building breadth in the squad for both domestic and European commitments.
Emery’s team continues to balance Premier League ambitions with progress in European competitions, and after winning the Europa League trophy, the aim is to maintain the momentum.
Negotiations to sign Nicolas are at an early stage, but the player’s enthusiasm and the simple buyout clause could speed up the process.
Gladbach, who hold Nicolas in high regard, will be hoping to keep their first goalkeeper unless the full sum of €15 million is met.
They have tried to tie him to new contract terms, but have so far had no luck, which is largely due to the fact that he is aware of the interest in him.
If all goes smoothly, Villa could make Nicolas their first summer signing – which would be a positive start to the transfer window.
