Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gary O’Neil are among the leading candidates to become the new manager of Ipswich. Former Manchester United boss Solskjaer is high on the tractors’ wish list to succeed Kieran McKenna at Portman Road.

Solskjaer took a break from the managerial job after leaving Manchester United in 2021, but he was eager to make a quick return after leaving Besiktas last summer.

He was passed over when there was talk of a return to Old Trafford last season, in favor of Michael Carrick. United thought it would be better to avoid someone who had already had the job before. McKenna worked under Solskjaer – along with assistant Martyn Pert – at Manchester United when the Norwegian led them to second place in the Premier League in 2020-2021.

BBC Sport reported on Ipswich’s interest in O’Neil earlier this month, and the Strasbourg boss has long been admired by the club’s management.

He played for Bristol City when current Ipswich director Mark Ashton was CEO there.

The French club had been confident that they would keep the former Wolverhampton coach, who joined the club in January, but he is still a candidate for the tractors.

The club are looking for a new manager after McKenna resigned last week, despite leading them back to the Premier League by finishing second in the Championship last season.

The 40-year-old coach took over the tractors in 2021 and led them to three promotions in the last four seasons, two of which have taken the club all the way to the top level.

McKenna was linked with the Fulham job after Marco Silva left the club, but he instead chose to retire to take a break from football and spend more time with his family.

“I feel that this is the right time for me to step aside,” he said.

“I do it with great pride in the incredible development we have had, and with great faith and optimism for the club’s future.
