In recent months, Spanish and English media have reported that Rashford was alternately on his way to a permanent transfer to Barcelona, only to be “sent back” to Old Trafford a few days later. Barcelona’s sporting director Deco has previously stated that they want Rashford to continue, but then there was this transfer fee of 30 million euros and Rashford’s salary expectations.

Although many take it for granted that Rashford will end up at Barcelona next season, there is a question mark in the air. After Atletico Madrid’s – and Alexander Sørloth’s masterclass for an anemic Rashford, the question is also asked whether the England international is the right player for Barcelona.

Spanish outlet SPORT branded Rashford “useless” and raised doubts about his “character” at key moments: “When Rashford came in, he didn’t contribute anything special. He lacks the character to be decisive at crucial moments.”

Spanish AS were even more critical, not only condemning Rashford’s disappointing performance, but also casting doubt on his future at the club: “As usual, a lot of fuss and nothing,” they wrote after the game. “He can’t continue next year.”

Now, Simon Stone, long-time United journalist for the BBC, reports that Marcus Rashford is open to returning to United after the season.

Rashford, meanwhile, is said to be hoping to turn his temporary stay at Barcelona into a permanent one, but is said to be willing and open to returning to United if needed.

A return to Old Trafford will please a good crowd of United supporters, while others question whether there is any point in bringing a player back when the main goal is to wear a Barcelona shirt.
