Romano adds that the lack of results in the transfer market is also “extenuating circumstances” for Carrick.

“Manchester United certainly know that the point of the summer transfer window was maybe to bring in one more player, a left-back. They tried. It wasn’t possible to move forward with the right options. United didn’t want to sign just to say, ‘OK, we signed one.’ They wanted to be convinced of the player they were going to sign, and that’s why nothing happened. After letting him down like that, they’re even more willing to be understanding of his starting problems at the start of the new season,” Romano concludes.
