“We have very good players,” Michael Carrick told TNT Sports. This came after an expected yet convincing 4-0 win against Sabah FA. Goals came from Cunha, Fernandes, Sesko and Martinez, but it was a midfield dynamic that Carrick wanted to highlight after the game.
“It’s nice to get Mason [Mount] and Andrey [Santos]. There are some good relationships and we’ve played good football through midfield,” Carrick continued after the Champions League win on Thursday. Mount got 45 minutes on the pitch, Santos the last half hour of the game.

Carrick had experimented with the midfield dynamic between Mason Mount and Andrey Santos during preseason this summer. Neither Santos nor Mount featured in the World Cup this summer, and Carrick used both in the midfield change ahead of the 2026–27 Premier League season.
Mount and Santos had briefly met at Chelsea, but the two did well with their dynamic for United during pre-season. Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo were brought into the mix and matching midfield at the end of United’s pre-season tour after the World Cup.

It would have been expected that Carrick is keen to use Mount as one of the two midfielders, or to alternate with Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 role.
Mason Mount will clearly get his opportunity to play his way to a real breakthrough in the United shirt, Andrey Santos will contribute to this.
