After three years and 107 games for Manchester United, Christian Eriksen stepped out as a free agent last summer. By then, his agent had been working in high gear since the new year to find the club and the league perfect for his client. Eriksen wanted to go to the World Cup with Denmark, where Saudi Arabian money bins or MLS were out of the question anyway. In the end, the choice fell on Germany’s 11th best club. This choice gave Eriksen a national team ticket, but has turned out to take a turn no one foresaw.

Because like his old club Tottenham, Wolfsburg have been on a steady course throughout the season towards relegation. The London club barely made it, but on Monday Eriksen had to admit that he has been involved in playing Wolfsburg out of the Bundesliga and down to the second division.

Wolfsburg finished 16th in the Bundesliga, and had to go into the relegation playoffs. Two games against Paderborn awaited him.

The first leg ended goalless, on Monday night Wolfsburg took the lead, but was reduced to ten men early in the game. Paderborn took advantage of the opportunity, turned the game around and won 2-1.

We don’t know if the former Manchester United star will be seen in the second division next season, but what is certain is that the season after Manchester United’s exit has been a huge one. Denmark did not qualify for the World Cup, Eriksen’s club took the humiliating trip into the relegation elevator.
