Sevilla were furious that Arda Güler escaped a red card last night, when they lost 4-1 at the Bernabéu to Real Madrid.

Sevilla boss Luis García Plaza claimed that Arda Güler escaped a red card last night because La Liga wanted Real Madrid to win and close the gap to Barcelona before next week’s Clásico.

Real Madrid ‘accept terms’ to sign Manchester United super talent

García Plaza’s side lost 4-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu – a result that brought Madrid within six points of Barça – but the match was marred by controversy when Güler escaped what appeared to be an obvious red card. Midway through the first half, he allegedly gave Peque Fernández an elbow while the two were standing together.

Referee Mateo Busquets Ferrer did not see the incident, and VAR referee Guillermo Cuadras Fernández chose not to intervene. The conflict led to chaotic scenes where both Madrid’s Dean Huijsen and Sevilla captain Félix Correia received yellow cards.

Scored soon after – and killed the game

To make matters worse for Sevilla, Güler scored the first goal of the game for Madrid shortly afterwards. From there, the home side cruised to victory, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Yan Diomande adding one more. Manu Bueno reduced the deficit for the away side, but Sevilla were left with a clear sense of injustice.

“A game is 11 against 11, but we have been deprived of the opportunity to play 11 against 10. In the league you sometimes play games with more or fewer players, and today it was our turn to play with more,” García Plaza said.

“We have to play 11 against 10 from the 25th minute. It’s unbelievable. That’s the summary of the game – we don’t know what would have happened.

Believes Clásico considerations influenced the decision

When asked why VAR did not intervene, García Plaza added:

“I don’t know. Maybe because they [Madrid] would be nine points behind Barça before the Clásico if we win? You should talk more to the VAR than to the referee, who may not have seen it. With Barça, Madrid and Atlético, there are many more cameras on the pitch – that’s why for me it’s just one more VAR view. That’s a very clear mistake.

Sevilla’s complaints came just 24 hours after Real Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini expressed frustration at what he perceived as several decisions that fell in Barcelona’s favour on Saturday night, as the league leaders won 5-2 away to La Cartuja.

And while Madrid and Barça often end up in verbal duels over refereeing in Spain, García Plaza highlighted that in his opinion they are among the two clubs that benefit the most from it.

“The ones who complain the most are the ones who have the least to complain about: Madrid, Barça and Atlético. I’ve been in this for a long time, and it’s always the same story,” he said.
