After the Bodø/Glimt exit in 2024, Grønbæk has gone from Ligue 1 (Rennes), to the Premier League (Southampton), to Serie A (Genoa) without establishing himself. When it became known in February that the Dane was on his way to Hamburger SV and the Bundesliga, this was described as a smart choice. After a slow start to the rental period with damage, it has finally loosened up. After Saturday’s goal and assist, work is being done on a permanent solution.

For Grønbæk, there has been little sporting success after the exit from Bodø/Glimt. While he has followed his former teammates’ success in Europe, Grønbæk himself has worked hard to no avail, with far too much bench time at Rennes, Southampton and Genoa.

Grønbæk was brought in on loan to Hamburger SV in February, a club on course for relegation. The former Glimt star should help give the extra boost in the attacking game. It was not until the beginning of April that he made his debut, in the fifth Bundesliga game on Saturday that Grønbæk came with both an assist and a goal to a strong 1-2 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the last four games, he has been in the starting eleven, so on Saturday came the first goal points. This was HSV’s first win since the beginning of March. With two rounds to go, the Hamburg club only needs a single point to mathematically ensure survival in the Bundesliga.

According to Bild , work is now underway to put in place a permanent agreement, where HSV exercises the purchase option at Rennes of 5 million euros. The German media claims HSV has been in contact with Grønbæk’s agent to discuss a deal, a salary cut will then be necessary.

Board member at HSV Eric Huwer stated earlier in the week that they are satisfied with the Dane.

“The transfer this winter was an absolute coup. Then the injury came, and we had to wait for him for a while. In Frankfurt, you could see what he is capable of. The way he scores the first goal, the way he sets up the second, the way he runs. The feeling is that he is very happy here, says Eric Huwer according to Bild.

It is quite clear that German football suits Grønbæk. Now survival in the Bundesliga must be secured, then the focus is on a continuation for the former Glimt star in a club and league with playing time and development.
