Folarin Balogun can play for the United States in the World Cup quarter-finals against Belgium on Monday – after FIFA has suspended the quarantine for a year.

The striker, who is the USA’s top scorer in the championship with three goals, was sent off in the 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. He stepped on the ankle of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović – a tackle that USA coach Mauricio Pochettino later described as “normal” and “never” worthy of a red card.

The same rule that gave Ronaldo time off

The quarantine would have kept Balogun out of what is probably the biggest match in the history of the United States men’s national team. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee decided to revoke the red card in line with Article 27 of the Disciplinary Code – which allows them to revoke red cards.

FIFA used the same clause in the past to clear Cristiano Ronaldo to start Portugal’s opening matches in a previous World Cup, after he was sent off against Ireland in qualifying.

However, the decision has one caveat: If Balogun commits “another offense of similar nature and severity,” he will have to serve one match.

US Soccer: – Full focus on Belgium

A statement from US Soccer states:

Now Balogun is ready for what could be the USA’s biggest fight ever. – And FIFA, they bend the rules as usual when it suits them.
