The Saudi Arabian powerful and very wealthy boxing boss Turki Alalshikh is working diligently to finally make a big dent in English football.
Turki Alalshikh, the Saudi Arabians’ powerful boxing manager, is in talks about an investment deal in a major English club. Ever since Alalshikh first emerged in the sports world as a key driving force in boxing, the Saudi Arabian government official has been strongly linked to various football clubs.

Last year, it was reported that the boxing boss had held talks with Championship club Bristol City about a potential investment. Bristol City boss Tom Rawcliffe confirmed the negotiations at the time.
But Alalshikh later came out and denied these claims. Thus, the rumors of an investment in The Robins were put to rest.
Now: Derby County in talks
Now, less than a year later, it seems he is finally preparing to make a big football move. He is in advanced negotiations on an investment deal with another Championship club.
The Telegraph has revealed that Derby County had detailed and secret talks with the Saudi – and are now just waiting for the green light from the authorities to move forward with the deal.
The article claims that Alalshikh has been in talks with Derby owner David Clowes about financial assistance, as the Rams look to increase their purchasing power ahead of next season.
IFR must approve the agreement
Before the deal can be executed, the independent football regulator (IFR) must carry out the necessary checks. Only then can Clowes potentially get permission to enter into a deal – a process that is already underway.
The IFR, which was established in July 2025, is tasked with protecting and promoting the sustainability of English football.

Must document that the funds come from outside the PIF
A further report by The Times adds that in order for the IFR to approve the deal, Alalshikh must be able to demonstrate that his funding comes separately from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) – the sovereign wealth fund that owns Newcastle United.
The report also adds that the Saudi has recently been spotted following a number of social media accounts linked to Derby County.
Ownership and role
At present, it is not known exactly what Alalshikh’s proposed investment entails. He has previously owned the Egyptian football club Pyramids and the Spanish club UD Almería.
It has previously been reported that Clowes has been open to selling up to 80 percent of his stake – but only if he himself is allowed to continue as the club’s chairman.
Derby’s season
Derby are currently managed by former player John Eustace. The club finished eighth in the Championship table this season, just four points away from a play-off place.
