Liverpool Football Club have finalised an agreement with FC Barcelona to loan Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo. Araujo will wear Liverpool’s shirt throughout the 2026/27 season.

Liverpool state that the transfer is still dependent on certain formalities being completed – including the player getting a work permit, as well as registration and international approval.

“I can’t wait to get started”

“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” the Uruguayan told Liverpool’s website.

“I’m thrilled to be here at this huge club with so much history. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates, can’t wait to start playing – and I’m very motivated and really ready to get started.

Ronald Araujo has belonged to Barcelona since 2019 and has played over 200 games for the Spanish great. Last season, he took over the captain’s armband at the club. Now he is embarking on a new adventure in the Premier League.

“I think this was the perfect step for me in this phase of my career. I think it was a step I had to take. As soon as I heard about the interest from Liverpool, everything went very, very fast,” says the 27-year-old.

Ronald Araujo is a national team player for Uruguay, but had to sit out this summer’s World Cup due to a calf injury.

The Uruguayan stopper is expected to wear shirt number 33 at Liverpool. He arrives after finishing his stay at Barcelona – and is ready for a new challenge in the Premier League.

Over 200 appearances for Barcelona

Araujo joins Liverpool after several years at Barcelona, where he made over 200 appearances across all competitions. He established himself as one of the Catalan giants’ most important stoppers.

The 27-year-old has won the Spanish league title three times with Barcelona since joining the club in 2018 – most recently last season. Earlier this year, he also wore the captain’s armband for the Catalan club.

Iraola brings in defensive reinforcement

Araujo will now join Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool. The coaching staff hopes to use his defensive qualities and European experience to strengthen the squad before the new season starts.

With Araujo in place, Liverpool will have a solid and experienced stopper who can contribute both on the pitch and in the dressing room.
