Guéhi has started in all five of England’s World Cup matches so far.
England defender Marc Guéhi will be assessed on Friday to see if he is ready to play Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
The centre-back struggled with a slight hamstring injury after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the last eight at the Azteca Stadium.
Tottenham are chasing lightning fast Norwegian international winger – who Erling Haaland “loves”
On the positive side: Right-back Reece James trained as expected on Thursday and is fit for the game. However, Declan Rice did not train again – he is affected by social sickness.
At first, it was hoped that Guéhi only had muscle fatigue and would be ready against Norway. Now it turns out that the Manchester City defender has a hamstring strain.
Guéhi is willing to test his form and is optimistic about participating. But if he can’t train with the team on Friday, there will be big doubts about whether he can play against Norway.
The injury is not serious – but with seven-goal Erling Braut Haaland on the other side, England coach Thomas Tuchel can hardly afford to take chances with defenders who are not one hundred percent.
Rice struck by social sickness
Midfielder Rice has reportedly missed his second day of training in a row due to illness.
Rice has already struggled with a nerve problem that affects her hamstring and lower back – and this has been exacerbated by the disease. England has implemented measures to prevent the spread of infection.
Good news for Tuchel
On the plus side: The first choice at right-back, Reece James, was back in full training for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury in a goalless 0-0 draw against Ghana.
James did not complete the entire session – but is expected to be available against Norway if he does not feel any negative after-effects from Thursday’s training.
Defense alternatives against Norway
James’ return – in a position that has been a problem area for England due to injuries and suspensions – is a welcome boost for Tuchel.
BBC Sport reported on Monday that the Chelsea defender was expected back in training and relevant against Norway.
On Thursday, it emerged that Jarell Quansah, who started at right-back against Mexico, has been suspended for two games after the red card in the last eight.
Newcastle’s Tino Livramento suffered a calf injury before the start of the championship – and Chelsea stopper Trevoh Chalobah, who can also play fullback, was brought in as a replacement.
With injuries and suspensions, Djed Spence was potentially the only natural right-back available against Norway.
Guéhi’s form is another headache. John Stones, Dan Burn and Chalobah are all available as centre-backs should the Manchester City defender sit out.
Konsa on the right-back spot
Aston Villa stopper Ezri Konsa, who can cover right-back, told BBC Sport about filling that role in the Mexico win:
“With the heat, and having to change positions – and go to the right wing-back with one less man – it’s not easy. You have to move in, and when the ball is knocked over, you have to run out and try to stop crosses. The first ten minutes were tough mentally – I felt it a little bit, but I had to find a switch and overcome it.
Konsa praised Stones, who “just kept pushing me”:
“He even asked to swap places with me, but I said, ‘No, it’s fine.’ So I had to find that switch – and luckily I made it in time.
“I’m very proud of the guys and what we achieved that night. I always play where the manager wants me. As long as I’m on the pitch and helping the team, I’m happy – no matter where I play.
