Mateusz Kusznierewicz became world champion for the fifth time. This time, the most successful Polish sailor won the world championship in class 5.5.
Mateusz Kusznierewicz is the best again. The best Polish sailor has just won his fifth world champion title. The Pole won the title in the regatta in Porto Cervo in Sardinia. He was accompanied on the Aspire yacht by Przemysław Gacek and Edward Wright, two-time world champion in the Finn class.
Although in the last race of the world championship Mateusz Kusznierewicz took fifth place and lost this position several times during the competition, in the last meters before the finish line he managed to get to fifth place, which was enough to win the gold medal with only 1 point advantage over the Norwegian yacht Artemis, with which Kristian Nergaard was in command. The Pole, together with Przemysław Gacek and Edward Wright, entered the last stage of the competition as the leader of the general classification.
– Winning gold in class 5.5 after fighting until the last meters is an amazing feeling. It was difficult, but we sailed evenly throughout the regatta and put a lot of energy into the triumph. Every day we made progress and learned from our mistakes. I believe that this dedication was the key to our success – never give up and be better every day – said Mateusz Kusznierewicz after the win, quoted by Radio Zet.
