What could happen now is that the British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe is forced to buy more of Manchester United with money he doesn’t really have. – Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, Manchester United have again qualified for the Champions League, which seemed highly unlikely at the start of the season under Ruben Amorim’s leadership.

The Glazer family, who have been a tragedy and leech for Manchester United for almost 20 years, did not really relinquish power when they sold parts of the club to Sir Jim Ratcliffe and put him in charge of the day-to-day.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe won the race after a muddled process over Qatari Sheikh Jassim. – The question of whether he is ready for a new round will of course come when there will probably be talk of selling again.

The Glazer family “debates sale”

Some members of the Glazer family are considering selling their shares in Manchester United.

Some of the Glazer family’s members are open to selling their stake in Manchester United after more than two decades at the helm – but the Qatar-based group led by Sheikh Jassim is unlikely to get involved.

Sheikh Jassim and the Qatari group previously failed to complete a £4.5 billion takeover of Manchester United.

Back in November 2022, the Glazer family announced that they were open to a potential sale of the club. After a lengthy process, Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe were declared the two main bidders.

Jassim is said to have offered around £5 billion for the club, according to a report by the BBC, of which £1.4 billion was proposed to fund new stadium plans, training facilities and new players.

But after months of speculation, the negotiations ended in 2023, when Jassim’s camp withdrew from the process.

Almost a year later, Ratcliffe’s deal to buy a 27.7 per cent stake in United was completed – although some cost-cutting decisions made by the British billionaire and INEOS have since proved unpopular.

New rumours about bids

Once again, Jassim and the Qatari group have been linked with a renewed offer, after a report by Bloomberg on Thursday claimed that some members of the Glazer family have been discussing whether they should sell their stake in United.

It is said that several stakeholders in the US-based Glazer family have studied the possibility of divesting part – or all – of their ownership in the Premier League club.

Jassim and the Qatari group, on the other hand, have not been contacted about buying shares in United, according to the Mail. In fact, a bid is considered “very unlikely” – even if contact were to be made.

How much will the Glazer family sell for?

Back in October, it was reported that the Glazer family was preparing for a bid from foreign investors. A report from Star claimed that they were “open” to offers in excess of £5 billion for their 48.9 percent stake in the club.

The Glazer family completed their controversial acquisition of Manchester United in 2005, during Sir Alex Ferguson’s trophy-filled era.

Their ownership has coincided with the club’s five Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cup titles, one Champions League title, one Europa League title and one FIFA Club World Cup title.

However, a large part of the club’s fan base has been calling for change throughout the Glazer family’s regime – and United’s growing debt has aroused widespread discontent. – No wonder, in addition to the sale of shares, they have had the world’s largest straw into the club’s coffers. Old Trafford is leaky in several places and water flows in when it rains, while the Glazer family has enriched themselves with over a billion pounds.
