When Antonio Conte brought Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan from Manchester United, the Belgian got a real restart to his career. His stay at Old Trafford was not a success, but with Conte, the power forward thundered as one of Europe’s most goal-scoring strikers. Last season, Lukaku and Conte were reunited, this time at Napoli. New success and Serie A title, the Belgian with 14 goals and 10 assists in the league. Less than a year later, the mood is completely different. With six games left in the season, Lukaku is put in the “freezer”.

The Napoli management is furious with Romelu Lukaku, claims La Repubblica. The club’s third highest-paid player has been injured for much of the season, 64 minutes in the match arena has been the Belgian giant’s contribution.

Lukaku has had his season ruined with a hamstring injury and lack of match fitness, but it was still enough for Lukaku to be called up for national team duty for Belgium last month. Here he quickly cancelled due to a new injury.

The striker was expected back at Napoli at the end of the month, but Lukaku did not show up, he stayed in Belgium. The club then threatened disciplinary action and that Lukaku’s place in the first team could be revoked after he did not show up at the club’s training facility:

“SSC Napoli reports that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call to return to training. The club reserves the right to decide whether appropriate disciplinary action should be taken, as well as whether the player’s activity in the squad should continue permanently,” the club wrote.

La Repubblica reports Lukaku is still in Belgium, but is expected back next week. According to the Italian newspaper, Napoli will put the Belgian on the sidelines for the rest of the season anyway.
