Ronnie Deila, manager of Maccabi Tel Aviv, has admitted that it was he who was suspected of sexually harassing a female taxi driver on his way home. In a public statement, he apologized for the incident – and at the same time admitted that he remembers little because he had drunk too much.
“I would like to take up the case that has come up against me recently. There was an incident early Thursday morning, when I was driving home in a taxi. I don’t remember the details because I drank too much, and that’s why I chose to take a taxi,” the Norwegian wrote in the statement.
“If my words hurt the taxi driver, I sincerely apologize to her. I would also like to apologize to everyone at the club and to our wonderful fans. This behavior does not meet the standards and values I have set for myself. I take responsibility for the situation and commit to learning from it, improving and dealing with such things in a professional and proper manner. Again, I sincerely apologize.
Expected to be fired
After the incident, it is expected that Deila will now have to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv. According to Israeli media, the club has already begun to consider a dismissal, and the Norwegian’s time at the club seems to be over.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the incident happened last weekend and that the investigation is still ongoing. Deila was released under restrictive conditions, which include that he should not contact the complainant. The police are also planning a face-to-face confrontation between the coach and the taxi driver.
“Police officers from the Lev Tel Aviv station this morning summoned a suspect in his 50s, a foreign resident of Israel, for questioning. The suspicion relates to sexual harassment, following a complaint received over the weekend. Upon receipt of the complaint, the police opened an investigation, and the suspect was released today under restrictive conditions. The investigation is ongoing, says a statement from the police.
