Former ranking leader and seven-time grand slam winner John McEnroe spoke to “Super Express”. He assessed Hubert Hurkacz’s playing style and indicated what problem he had to solve to play even better.
Hubert Hurkacz has been in great shape lately. Since his performance at Wimbledon, he has presented consistently better tennis. At Wimbledon, he played an extremely fierce match with Nowak Djokovic. Not only did he win a set, but he was close to winning the entire match. It was exactly the same in his first fight with Carlos Alcaraz two weeks ago. It was even better in Cincinnati, where Hurkacz reached the semi-finals of the event, in which he not only won the first set with Alcaraz 6:2, but also had a match point in the next set. Although the Pole lost, he drew the attention of the whole world, which does not stop admiring him now.
Even John McEnroe shared his opinion on Hurkacz’s game. The legendary American tennis player, famous for his achievements and temperament, assessed the style of the Pole and pointed out what he should work on.
-He was doing exactly what he was supposed to do. He put himself in a position where he could win right away. Hubert has such a style of play that no one likes to play with him. On the other hand, his return statistics are very poor, probably even outside the Top 50 in the world. One of the lowest percentages of breaking the rival’s serve and that’s the problem. But I don’t think anyone will want to run into him at the US Open- McEnroe said.
