£100 million is little for an Italian midfield general if it can prevent a drop from the Premier League down to the Championship and instead contribute to qualification for games in Europe.

Tottenham have officially confirmed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle – in a deal that could rise to a whopping £100 million. It is a club record for the North London club.

Tonali will be the latest addition to a hectic summer for Spurs, who have finished 17th in the Premier League for two straight seasons. He joins Mateus Fernandes, Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dúbravka – a list of signings that has now surpassed £230 million in total.

The Italian international is no guarantee of success, as Italy’s lack of participation in this summer’s World Cup has clearly shown.

The 26-year-old Italian stated to the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. It was said that there were four or five clubs – but for me it was only one.

“I spoke to the manager for almost two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and the way we play. It was like magic – I knew right away that I had to sign for Tottenham. I have played against Tottenham several times and have always experienced a fantastic atmosphere from the supporters. I’m really looking forward to starting the season.

Tonali is now ready to lead Tottenham’s new midfield – and with a price tag of 100 million, expectations are sky-high.
