– Liverpool don’t want to sell – now Spurs are aiming for City star

Tottenham’s attempt to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool seems to be failing – and Roberto De Zerbi has already pointed out a new, far more expensive target: Manchester City’s Savinho.

According to transfer experts, Liverpool will not let go of Gakpo this summer. The Reds are said to demand at least £60 million for the Dutchman – and potentially as much as 70 million. Gakpo struggled at times for Liverpool last season, but regained his confidence during the World Cup – where he scored three times before the Netherlands’ surprise exit against Morocco.

Tottenham have already strengthened the defence and midfield for De Zerbi, and now they have turned their attention to the winger positions. The Italian wants both players – Gakpo and Savinho – and sees them as versatile quality players who can strengthen several positions in the attacking line.

We revealed on Saturday that Gakpo has agreed personal terms with Spurs, and that he has informed Liverpool of his desire to leave. Sources believe Spurs could seriously test Liverpool’s resolve with a £60m bid for the 27-year-old.

Crook: “It won’t happen”

But talkSPORT’s transfer reporter Alex Crook denies that Gakpo will be a Spurs player before the start of the season:

“I don’t think it will happen. I’ve spoken to sources at Liverpool and they think he’s had a good pre-season under Iraola – and that he’s a player Iraola can get the best out of.

“He will probably be open to a transfer, but for now I don’t expect it to happen before the deadline.

Savinho – the new main goal

Instead, De Zerbi and Spurs are now putting all their efforts into signing Savinho from Manchester City. Spurs have already agreed personal terms with the Brazilian – and they also negotiated for him last summer, without convincing City to sell.

Savinho signed a new contract at the Etihad, but Spurs believe a deal is possible now. According to The Times, Spurs are in talks with City about a huge offer worth £85 million.

Previously, the 22-year-old was predicted to cost around 60-65 million – but it looks like Spurs will have to go up considerably to get a deal.

Spurs are willing to spend money

It would not be surprising if Spurs launch a huge bid for Savinho. The signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have shown that Tottenham are willing to spend large sums of money to give De Zerbi a squad that can challenge for European qualification again.

The question is whether City will be tempted – or whether Savinho will be another dream that slips away.
