Rooney names ‘of course’ signing for United – after worrying Shaw performance

– United legend: “I don’t think you can trust Luke Shaw”

Wayne Rooney has pointed to Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly as a “obvious” signing for Manchester United – after expressing concern about Luke Shaw’s performance in the friendly against AC Milan.

United have had a quiet transfer window with only two outfield signings before Michael Carrick’s first full season as manager. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have been brought in to strengthen the midfield – but left-back is still an open wound.

That became clear last weekend, when the 31-year-old Shaw struggled mightily in the 4-2 loss to Milan – led by former United boss Ruben Amorim.

“You can’t trust Shaw”

In the first episode of his new podcast “Stick to United”, Rooney admitted that United can hardly rely on Shaw to maintain a consistent level over an entire season.

“I thought he had a very good season last season, but he didn’t have the best game against AC Milan. So I don’t think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent throughout the season,” Rooney said.

Presenter Mark Goldbridge went so far as to blame Shaw for all of Milan’s four goals.

“Lewis-Skelly is absolutely obvious”

Rooney believes Arsenal’s young defender Myles Lewis-Skelly is the perfect solution:

“I know we hear that he is available for little money. I think it’s completely obvious. If you can get a player who can play left-back – and also midfield – young, with a huge future ahead of him, then it’s easy. Bring him in.

“United need a physical midfielder”

Rooney also revealed concerns about United’s midfield – despite Santos and Tielemans being in place. He pointed to a former Villa teammate of Tielemans as the right type of player:

“I don’t know who this player is, but I would like to see some physical activity in the middle of the pitch. A big box-to-box midfielder who can break up plays, drive the ball and see a pass.

“If you look at Tielemans, Mainoo and Santos – they’re all little boys. There is not much speed among the three. Probably like Amadou Onana at Villa – maybe not him, but that profile is what United need in the middle.
