When VAR was introduced, the promises that now misjudgement would be eliminated. We now know that video refereeing is not the final solution, on the contrary. In the World Cup, the assistant referees will also be given an electronic tool that will make offside tricks impossible.

So far, the starting point has been that the match should not be interrupted in case of doubt, because VAR can always double-check, but in practice this has resulted in many situations being played on unnecessarily. The BBC reports FIFA is introducing an advanced semi-automatic offside, which specifically means that the referees in the World Cup will hear a specific sound in their headset if a player is more than ten centimeters offside.

FIFA introduces semi-automatic offiside technology in the World Cup

It will still be the refereeing team that has the final decision, and if a linesman suspects a technical foul, the flag must of course be held down, but FIFA has implemented a number of measures in the technology to avoid errors, it says.

Suspect a technical error

The technology still can’t capture the very marginal offside decisions of less than ten centimeters, but FIFA hopes that its introduction will eliminate some frustration among players and spectators.

For the World Cup, new technology will also be introduced that can reveal whether the ball has been out of play – for example, in the run-up to a goal.
