Steve McClaren has been part of Manchester United for two periods. First as an assistant coach for Alex Ferguson from 1999 to 2001, then for Erik ten Hag from 2022 to 2024. Both authoritarian coaches, but with very different degrees of success. McClaren himself has been tested as a head coach, most recently as national team coach for Jamaica until November 2025. Now McClaren keeps his tie on – this time he will use his flair to give Rotherham United the strategy to grow – and not least revenge the season’s relegation.

McClaren has been head coach at Queens Park Rangers, Derby, Newcastle, Twente and Middlesbrough, as well as being England manager for 18 games from 2006 to 2007. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the 65-year-old will start as director of football for Rotherdam United, where he will be responsible for the strategic part of the football store.

Rotherdam moved between the Championship and League One for six consecutive seasons between 2016–17 and 2021–22, winning the play-offs in 2018 as well as the EFL Trophy final in 2022. Now, in the 2025–26 season, Rotherham were relegated to League Two for the first time since the 2012–13 season.

-Discussions with Steve have been going on for some time, which has given both parties a clear common understanding of the role and our ambitions for the club’s development. His CV speaks for itself, but we have also been very impressed by his enthusiasm and desire to create positive change at Rotherham United,” Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart told the club’s website.

We wish you the best of luck on your journey.
