After Klopp left Anfield as a Liverpool legend after almost nine years as manager, the question of what will be his next move has kept cropping up. Many assumed that he would take over as German national team coach after the 2024 European Championship, but the German Football Association chose to keep Nagelsmann instead.
After reaching the quarter-finals of the European Championships, Nagelsmann received a contract extension that binds him until the European Championship in 2028. Still, the links between Klopp and Germany have never gone away – and the rumours are unlikely to subside anytime soon.
After Germany’s shocking World Cup exit against Paraguay, the pressure on Nagelsmann will only increase. Klopp is ready to take the job if Nagelsmann is sacked.
Nagelsmann refuses to go – but the pressure is increasing
Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead, but Kai Havertz equalized just before the hour was played. Nevertheless, it was Paraguay who advanced after a penalty shootout.
Nagelsmann has not yet been fired, but many believe it is only a matter of time.
“I’m not going to retire,” Nagelsmann told the press after the game.
“If the DFB wants me to continue, I will continue. But I know how this industry works. I know that many people want me to leave now, but I will continue if DFB wants it.
“If we conducted an opinion poll in Germany today, the German people would not speak very positively about me. We haven’t done much in this championship for people to celebrate. I know that not everyone in Germany will agree with me staying.
Klopp ready for the task
If Nagelsmann is sacked, Klopp should be ready to lead Germany in the World Cup in 2030 and potentially the European Championship in 2028, according to The Telegraph. A possible deal between Klopp and the DFB would probably have to allow Klopp not to spend every weekend following German players in the Bundesliga and abroad.
After Germany’s loss to Paraguay, it didn’t take long before Klopp was asked about the possibility of replacing Nagelsmann.
“I haven’t thought about it yet,” Klopp said.
“I understand that when the national team coach role is discussed, my name is mentioned in one form or another. But it’s not the moment to talk about it. There’s nothing to say about that. I have a job I really enjoy. As far as I know, it’s not a part-time job.
