Koeman resigns as Netherlands national team manager after World Cup exit

Ronald Koeman has resigned as the Netherlands’ head coach after the team was eliminated from the World Cup – and after several players were subjected to racist abuse after the loss to Morocco.

The Netherlands were knocked out in the last eight after a 1-1 draw in Monterrey and a penalty shootout. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville all abused their sentences – and were then subjected to racist and discriminatory hate speech on social media.

Koeman announced his resignation on Instagram, marking the end of his second term as national team manager. He also hinted that it could be the end of his coaching career.

“When I look back on my career, I feel especially proud,” he said.

“We all dreamed of a World Cup where we would make history. It didn’t work. No one is more disappointed about it than me.

Personal circumstances influenced the decision

The 63-year-old stated that events off the football field have played a significant role in the decision to leave the role. He revealed that the last few years have changed his outlook on life and the importance of football – referring to the health challenges his wife Bartina has experienced.

“The last few years have made me realize again that there are more important things than football,” he said.

“Football has been my whole life, but health is priceless. When someone you love fights a tough battle, your perspective changes.

Dutch Football Association condemns racist abuse

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) strongly condemned the abuse of Kluivert, Timber and Summerville after the penalty loss. The federation confirmed that it will take legal action wherever possible and work with the authorities to identify those responsible.

“We think this is terrible,” said the KNVB.

The incident is reminiscent of the harassment of England players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho after they missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The KNVB reiterated its position against discrimination:

“Football brings together millions of different people, while discrimination does the exact opposite. It goes against everything football stands for.
