There were not a few who were stunned when Bayern Munich chose new coach Vincent Kompany as Tuchel’s replacement. This came directly after Kompany had led Burnley to relegation in the Premier League. The debut season started with a Bundesliga title, this season Bayern are cruising towards a new title and a record number of goals, on Wednesday Kompany’s Bayern game sank Real Madrid. Now, there is not a jaw that questions the Manchester City legend’s competence. For the down-to-earth Belgian, Wednesday’s wild 4-3 win against Real Madrid was on par with two games as Burnley coach.
It’s not every day Real Madrid and Blackburn are mentioned in the same sentence, but Vincent Kompany made the exception on Wednesday night. “I remember beating Blackburn twice at Burnley and there’s probably no one in this room who would compare that to the game today (Wednesday), but it was fantastic,” Kompany explained at the press conference.
