Norway’s coach Ståle Solbakken has made major changes, with 10 changes from the team that beat Senegal last time out, with only Aursnes keeping their place. This means that Manchester City’s superstar Haaland is only among the substitutes. They are only the fourth team to have made over 10 changes to their starting eleven for a World Cup match in the same edition, after Spain in 2006 (11 against Saudi Arabia), Belgium in 2018 (10 against Japan) and Brazil in 2022 (10 against Korea). Didier Deschamps opts for four changes in France, with Theo Hernández, Lacroix, Tchouameni and Doue coming in for Saliba, Rabiot, Digne and Barcola. This match will already be Real Madrid’s ace Mbappé’s 15th World Cup start – 27 years and 188 days old, he is the youngest to start 15 games in the tournament, ahead of Argentina’s Mario Kempes (27 years 343 games).

FRANCE SUBSTITUTES: Brice Samba, Malo Gusto, Lucas Digne, Marcus Thuram, Bradley Barcola, N’Golo Kanté, Adrien Rabiot, Ibrahima Konate, William Saliba, Warren Zaire-Emery, Lucas Hernandez, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Robin Risser, Rayan Cherki, Maghnes Akliouche

FRANCE (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan; Theo Hernandez, Maxence Lacroix, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Kounde; Manu Kone, Aurelien Tchouameni; Desire Doue, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, Kylian Mbappé

NORWAY SUBSTITUTES: Ørjan Nyland, Morten Thorsby, Kristoffer Ajer, David Møller Wolfe, Alexander Sørloth, Sander Berge, Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Sander Tangvik, Marcus Pedersen, Torbjörn Heggem, Antonio Nusa, Jens Petter Hauge, Sondre Langås, Julian Ryerson

NORWAY (4-2-3-1): Egil Selvik; Fredrik Björkan, Leo Østigård, Henrik Falchener, Fredrik Aursnes; Patrick Berg, Kristian Thorstvedt; Andreas Schjelderup, Thelo Aasgaard, Oscar Bobb; Jørgen Strand Larsen

Norway has faced France in a World Cup, but has met Les Bleus 16 times, and last lost 4-0 in 2014 at the Stade de France. In fact, Norway has only won two of their previous ten competitive matches against France, and the last one was a European Championship qualifier all the way back in June 1987. Norway has never beaten a European country in the World Cup, with two draws and three losses – although each of the losses was against Italy. They have achieved as many victories in this World Cup as they have in their three previous participations combined (victory in 1938, victory in 1994, victory in 1998).

Both of these teams are already through to the round of 32 after winning their first two games against Senegal and Iraq. As things stand now, France will face Sweden, while Norway will face Ivory Coast. France are among the favourites going into the tournament, but winning here would be only the second time they have won all three group stage matches at a World Cup, the last time being in 1998 when they won the tournament on home soil. Les Bleus have won all five of their last World Cup matches against other European opponents, beating five different teams in this period (Belgium, Croatia, Denmark, Poland and England). It represents their longest winning streak against a particular confederation in the tournament.

Norway will face France on Friday at Boston Stadium in a group stage match in the FIFA World Cup between two in-form teams that have already secured a place in the round of 32.

Norway won 3-2 over Senegal in their last group game on June 22. Erling Haaland scored two goals and led the scoring. They are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions. In six games this year, they have three wins, two draws and one loss.

France’s final group game saw them win 3-0 over Iraq on June 22 at the Philadelphia Stadium, their third straight win. Kylian Mbappé scored two goals and led the scoring. In 2026, they have won five and lost one.

France and Norway are in first and second place respectively in the group, with six points.

With zero points, Senegal are third in the group and are still in contention for a round of 32 final. Iraq is facing elimination, and is in fourth place with zero points.

The last time the teams met, it was France who secured a 4-0 victory in May 2014.

Haaland has caught the attention for Norway in World Cup games. He is the team’s top scorer with four goals, which is tied for second highest among the tournament’s top scorers, one of whom has been the game’s first goalscorer. Mbappé has been France’s leading attacking threat, with four goals in the current World Cup campaign, including two goals in the opening game. The striker is tied for second on the competition’s points list.

France have scored in 15 straight games in all competitions. They have hit the back of the net in every game since a Nations League meeting with Croatia in March 2025.

In their last six games in all competitions, Norway have won three, drawn two and lost one. The Norwegian team scored 12 and conceded seven in this period, scoring first in four of the six games. Most of their goals (seven) came in the first half, while their opponents scored three goals in the first 45 minutes. France have won five and lost one in their last six. The French team scored 15 and conceded six in this period, scoring first in all six. They scored six goals in the first half, while their opponents failed to score before half-time.

Two of the world’s best strikers meet tonight when Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland meet in World Cup Group I.

Both Norway and France have already qualified for the knockout stages after winning their first two matches, but first place is still open before this duel.

Norway has had an outstanding return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence. Ståle Solbakken’s side opened the season with a convincing 4-1 win over Iraq before beating Senegal 3-2 and securing two wins in two.

Haaland has been at the heart of their success, scoring four goals in their first two games and establishing himself as one of the tournament’s top scorers.

Despite collecting six points, Norway is in second place in Group I due to France’s better goal difference. A win on Friday would see them pass Les Bleus and take first place.

France, on the other hand, has looked like one of the tournament’s favorites.

Didier Deschamps’ side opened with a 3-1 win over Senegal before comfortably beating Iraq 3-0.

Mbappé has been in sensational form, matching Haaland’s four goals and has once again proven to be the focal point of France’s attack.
