For several months, Adam Wharton has been heavily linked to Liverpool. The 22-year-old at Crystal Palace is seen as one of England’s next midfield stars, but in recent weeks there has been complete silence about Wharton’s potential move to Anfield. The explanation may lie in London.

Liverpool now look set to not sign Adam Wharton this summer, despite the fact that the Crystal Palace player has previously been described as a “dream target”. The Reds are on the hunt for a new midfielder, and Wharton has quickly emerged as the most likely candidate in the run-up to the summer transfer window. That was then.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, it would now be a surprise if the English midfielder ends up at Anfield, and the sudden availability of Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall could be the reason for that. There had been some reservations about Wharton joining Liverpool, especially given the daunting £80 million price tag. When Liverpool hired Andoni Iraola, Wharton also seemed to be much more suited to playing an Arne Slot-style football.

Ben Jacobs pulls his analysis on Talksport:

“In the case of Adam Wharton, there are a lot of links to Liverpool, but it’s not moving, I’ve been told, as it is now.”

In the past week, it has become clear Lucas Bergvall will “seek new challenges” outside Tottenham, according to the hyperactive transfer journalist Romano, Bergvall will be available for £45-50 million, i.e. half of Wharton.
