A clear dream signing after Xabi Alonso took over at Stamford Bridge.

Amid claims that Liverpool will publicly deny that a shock sale of Florian Wirtz to Chelsea could take place, an insider has revealed what Liverpool’s owners, FSG, have actually decided to do with the German.

Wirtz became Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever when he arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million last summer. He held that record for just a few months before being overtaken by Alexander Isak at £125 million.

Any player who goes for such an amount is expected to make immediate success – especially considering how Wirtz wreaked havoc in the Bundesliga under his former manager, Xabi Alonso.

A difficult season in red

Nevertheless – like many others in a Liverpool shirt – Wirtz experienced a difficult season. He finished the season with respectable numbers: seven goals and ten assists. But most of his goal contributions came against what you might call weaker opponents.

It is undeniable that far more was expected, and this led Football Insider to claim that Liverpool could well allow a sale of Wirtz to Chelsea. There, the German would reunite with the manager who made him famous – Xabi Alonso.

They claimed that Alonso was “eager” to bring about a reunion, writing: “The Blues have a strong interest in the 23-year-old just one year after the Merseyside giants brought him in from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth upwards of £116 million.”

“Sources say Liverpool will be open to letting Wirtz go if the right deal comes along – even if they will publicly deny it.”

TEAMtalk has now gained access to exclusive information about Wirtz’s future.

And even though the 23-year-old did not perform at the expected level, Liverpool’s management retains full faith in the playmaker. They have no intention whatsoever of selling Wirtz to Chelsea or any other club, for that matter.

Their insider, Graeme Bailey, explained:

“Liverpool are not going to move on from Florian Wirtz. They worked so hard for that transfer and the word from inside Anfield is that the way he finished the season was a really positive sign.”

“They know he struggled to adapt at first, but they had so many new players coming in – it was never meant to be easy.”

“But even if someone – like Bayern Munich, who wanted him before, or Xabi Alonso, who pushed for him at Chelsea – were to come on the pitch, there is no chance that Liverpool will let him go. And they insist that they haven’t heard anything from anyone.”

Wirtz stays at Liverpool

Bailey concluded his update by immediately closing this speculative chapter once and for all:

“Wirtz will STAY at Liverpool.”
