On Tuesday, Liverpool confirmed they had signed Jeremy Jacquet, with the Rennes player travelling to Anfield after the season. Flashed as the successor to Virgil van Dijk and with a £60 million price tag after 32 games at senior level, everything changed for the 20-year-old. On Wednesday, the “whole” football world turned its attention to Rennes-Marseille in the French Cup to see what Liverpool have invested so heavily in.
There was certainly a lot of interest from Reds supporters when Jacquet was selected in Rennes’ starting line-up for the round of 16 against Marseille in the French Cup. After going down after just two minutes, Rennes lost 3-0, and Jacquet had to go through a miserable night against former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood.

GetFootballNews France gave Jaquet a rating of 5/10 and wrote: “Now that he has been bought by Liverpool, the €60 million price tag is already hanging over every performance, and Reds supporters are watching. His forward positions on the ball were interesting, but he looked exposed defensively in the second half, especially with Greenwood’s speed on the counter-attack.”
MaxiFoot gave him a dismal 4/10 rating, adding: “Jeremy Jacquet: Despite his late return from Liverpool, the centre-back from Stade Rennais started the game and did his best despite the recent turmoil. The Reds’ future star was sent off by Gouiri for the opening goal, but he could not have foreseen Merlin’s mistake. He was solid against the Algerian and often cleared up danger in his own penalty area. However, like his defensive teammates, the Breton was poorly positioned for Greenwood’s goal.”

Okay, maybe not catastrophically bad, but for Jacquet this is only a fraction of pressure compared to what he faces as a Liverpool player on the ball island.
