It’s been a La Liga season where Sevilla have been teetering on the edge of the cliff. – The gap between the bottom clubs in the table has been small. Sevilla survives only 1 point above Mallorca who are relegated to 13th place in La Liga.

The battle for 3rd place

There is only one game left in the series. – Later today, Villarreal will host Atletico Madrid at the Estadio de la Cerámica. – The two teams have the same score in 3. and 4th place.

It was the only goal of the game in Sevilla’s season finale. Fortunately for Nyland, he did well throughout the match and did not concede any more.

Nyland has had a tough season in Seville

Before Saturday’s game, Nyland had only played two games in 2026 – both for the national team. With the flag on his chest, he stood the entire match against the Netherlands (1-2) and one half against Switzerland at the end of March.

In Sevilla, the 35-year-old has had very limited playing time, and Saturday’s game was therefore a long-awaited chance to show off for the new club owners.

New owners in place in Sevilla and new manager José Juan Romero

Sevilla is undergoing major changes. The club was recently acquired by an investor group Five Eleven Capital under the leadership of Sergio Ramos. The new owners have already signalled that they want to rebuild the club after several lean years in La Liga.

Several sources in Spain report that the summer will be crucial for large parts of the squad – including the goalkeeper position. It is therefore extra important for Nyland to show off when the chance first presents itself. Maybe it’s already too late…

The road so far for Ørjan Håskjold Nyland

Ørjan Håskjold Nyland started his career in Hødd, before moving on to Molde in 2013. There he quickly established himself as one of the elite league’s best goalkeepers.

In 2015, he was signed by Ingolstadt in the Bundesliga, before moving on to Aston Villa in 2018. After a loan spell at Norwich and a short spell at RB Leipzig, Nyland signed for Sevilla in 2023.

At Sevilla, he has struggled to get regular game time, but has mostly delivered solidly when he has been given the chance. On the national team, he has been Norway’s indisputable first goalkeeper in recent years – and is now ready for his third major championship.

Selected for the World Cup in football

For this summer’s World Cup, Nyland has been selected together with Egil Selvik and Sander Tangvik in the goalkeeper position. With 35 years under his belt, this is probably his last opportunity to show off in a World Cup.
