You didn’t have to be a Manchester United supporter to be entertained by this weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest. It was great entertainment for the money! The Red Devils ran away with a 3-2 victory and secured third place in the Premier League, the Champions League ticket was already secured. Now it turns out that the match picture against Forest could have looked completely different if the referee had trusted the VAR images more.

Matheus Cunha put in the 2-1 goal after just under an hour, but the goal should have been nullified. The ProfessionalGame Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) now admits this.

Just before the goal, Bryan Mbeumo reached out a hand to “help”.

Referee Michael Salisbury also ran up to the screen, but he did not change his initial assessment, and it was therefore a mistake. It was a mistake that Manchester United’s second goal against Nottingham Forest was allowed to stand. PGMOL now admits it.

Thus, Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira was right in his wonder.

“I looked at the iPad to see the situation through and I remained very calm, but at the end of the day, I think we have to sit down together to understand when there’s a hand on the ball, when there’s a block and when there’s a block in the box.

“Right now, we don’t know what is allowed and what is not, and often we do not understand the decisions. But I have to accept it,” he told the BBC after the game.
