In the fall of 2022, Simona Halep was suspended after failing a doping control. The tennis player maintained that she had not taken any banned substances and had evidence of her innocence. The court reportedly did not accept Halep’s evidence. What’s more, Halep was questioned in the case for the first time only at the end of June.
Former world number 1 tennis player Simona Halep has finally received a hearing at London County Court to appeal her doping suspension. Halep tested positive for the banned substance Roxadustat at the 2022 US Open and has since been provisionally suspended. That means almost nine months elapsed between her initial suspension and her hearing. The Romanian woman, who has repeatedly insisted on her innocence, is struggling to prove that she did not use the substance intentionally.
Digi Sport commentator Dragoș Suciu shed light on the matter. He opined that Halep would likely face a suspension of about two years from the decision. Suciu suspects Halep intends to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne. Suciu predicts that the Court of Arbitration for Sport may reduce the penalty by half. Suciu further revealed that a preliminary verdict is expected within two weeks.
