In 2023, it caused quite a stir, when an Argentine teenager in a Man Utd shirt snuck up to the penalty spot ahead of FC Copenhagen’s awarded penalty – and kicked up the grass. Alejandro Garnacho attempted the same in the second leg in Parken, an FCK defender blocked the Argentine this time. Two individual episodes that caused a stir, a behavior you wouldn’t expect from a Manchester United player either. When Ruben Amorim took over the reins in 2024 after sacking Ten Hag, Garnacho was clearly told that he had to go back to school to take some steps back in football education. The young Argentine did not cope with this. Now both Amorim and Garnacho are history at Old Trafford, but now the 21-year-old admits that he turned out.
In an interview with Sky Sports, the 21-year-old speaks out about his exit from Manchester United.

The first question is whether he regrets the way he left Man Utd.
“Maybe, yes. I really loved that club. They gave me confidence right from the start. They brought me from Spain to the academy and took me up to the first team. It was four to five years of love from everyone,” Garanacho begins.
Who feels that things started to go wrong during the last six months at the club.
“I remember that during the last six months, I suddenly didn’t play at all like I had before. I was on the bench, which is not really a bad thing. I was only 20 years old, but in my head it was like I had to play every game. In my head – and that part is maybe my fault – I started doing some stupid things,” says Garnacho.

Ruben Amorim was right to “jack down” Garnacho. Just a shame the Argentine had to leave United to understand it was for his own good.
