The Real Madrid full-back is going through a tough few weeks – and now he’s taken another hit.
Trent John Alexander-Arnold, 27 years old, is experiencing one of the heaviest periods of his career. After a disappointing season both individually and team-wise at Real Madrid, the England international was also dropped from Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad.

As if that wasn’t enough, reports in recent weeks have revealed that José Mourinho wants to strengthen the right-back position at Real Madrid – and the plan is said to be to sign the experienced Denzel Dumfries. Thus, the road to a permanent place at the Bernabéu becomes increasingly complicated for Trent, despite the fact that he clearly has more than enough quality to fight for a starting place.

Just when Alexander-Arnold was trying to relax with his family during the holidays, a little hope still appeared. With England still allowed to replace injured players less than 24 hours before the World Cup opener, right-back Tino Livramento suffered an injury that will keep him out of the entire tournament.
The logical replacement, many believed, would be Trent.
But Tuchel chose instead to call up 26-year-old Trevoh Chalobah. Admittedly, Chalobah can play both right-back and centre-back, but he spent much of the season as a substitute at Chelsea.
The decision makes one thing crystal clear: for some reason, Tuchel is looking at options other than Alexander-Arnold in his England plans – and that must be extra hard for a player who was previously seen as a given.
