Last year, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was on The Overlap’s “Stick to Football”, reminiscing about his time as Manchester United manager. When asked about Anthony Martial, he replied: “So talented, so talented. On his good days, he was impossible to play against. He had a good season. They played together, him and Marcus [Rashford], when we finished second that year [in 2019/20]”. However, the common perception among United supporters was that the Frenchman’s final seasons before leaving Old Trafford in 2024 were a big deal. The last few years have shown the French striker to have come to terms with the fact that his career in the biggest leagues may be over.
Martial was bought by Manchester United from Monaco in 2015 as the most expensive teenager of all time. United would even have to agree to a clause with a payout to the Ligue 1 club if Martial won the Ballon d’Or in four years. These were the expectations.

Anthony Martial is done at Monterrey
In the summer of 2024, his contract (finally) expired with United, the Frenchman gravitated to Greek football and AEK Athens as the league’s highest paid player by far, with around €3.3 million in annual salary. In his first season, the striker delivered nine goals and two assists, but Martial struggled to get minutes in the first team under new coach Marko Nikolic, who replaced Matias Almeyda in the summer of 2025. At the beginning of September, Martial was also seen as superfluous.
Then it was Mexico and Monterrey in September 2025 on a two-year contract, but already after 20 games with 1 poor goal, Martial is packing his bags again. According to transfer journalist Romano, “the parties have agreed to terminate the contract”, as it is so beautifully called.

Thus, the 30-year-old Martial is once again clubless. It is not good to say which league he will appear in next. Either way, we wish the Frenchman the best of luck on his journey.
