Real Madrid’s transfer strategy has for years used loan as a tool to develop players who have later become mainstays in the first team. Dani Carvajal, Casemiro, Fede Valverde and Lucas Vázquez are four names who all left the Santiago Bernabéu temporarily – before returning to write themselves into the club’s history books.
It’s not every time they succeed, Martin Ødegaard (random example) was sent on loan several times and achieved legend status at Arsenal and not at Real Madrid.

Dani Carvajal – the loan that changed the right-back position forever
Dani Carvajal is the clearest example of how a loan can become a lasting investment. The right-back went to Bayer Leverkusen in 2012 for around €5 million, played one season in Germany – and was bought back by Real Madrid the following year for €6.5 million.
Carvajal was 21 years old at the time. He returned home after a season in which Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga, and his performances convinced the management to bring him back after just one year.
The result? 13 seasons in the first team, 450 games and 27 trophies – including six Champions League titles. When he ended his time at the club in 2026, he was one of the players with the most trophies in Real Madrid’s history.

Casemiro and Fede Valverde – two midfielders who flourished away from the Bernabéu
Casemiro also needed a loan spell before he became an indispensable piece in the Real Madrid machinery. The Brazilian spent the 2014/15 season at Porto, where he gained important minutes and European Cup experience before returning to Spain to establish himself.
On his return, he stepped up and became the first team’s regular defensive midfielder for several seasons. Casemiro won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid before leaving for Manchester United in 2022.
Fede Valverde’s path was different, but just as clear. The Uruguayan joined Real Madrid from Peñarol in 2016, played for Castilla – and was loaned to Deportivo de La Coruña in 2017/18 to get games in La Liga.
His stay at A Coruña gave him valuable playing time. When he returned to Madrid, he went from being a great talent to becoming a regular player in midfield. In 2026, he also took over the role of first captain after Carvajal’s departure.
Lucas Vázquez – another loan that ended in trophies
Lucas Vázquez spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Espanyol, having made 66 appearances for Castilla in the Segunda División. The deal included an option to buy, but Real Madrid chose to keep the player.
When he returned, it was the start of over ten years in the first team. Lucas finished with 402 appearances, 38 goals, 73 assists and 23 trophies – including five Champions League titles.
A clear strategy
The list shows a deliberate plan in Real Madrid’s thinking: a loan does not mean losing sight of the player. On the contrary, in the cases of Carvajal, Casemiro, Valverde and Lucas, the loan spells became the springboard that gave them experience and match practice, before returning home to leave a lasting mark on the club’s history.
