– £50 million rejected – now comes a new bid for Yankuba Minteh

Liverpool are ready to make an improved bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh – after withdrawing from their pursuit of PSG’s Ibrahim Mbaye. With ten days left in the window, the pressure is mounting at Anfield.

Liverpool have only signed Jérémy Jacquet and Victor Muñoz so far this summer, but with Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konaté and Mohamed Salah out the door, it’s clear that Andoni Iraola needs more.

On Thursday, a £50 million bid for Minteh was rejected by Brighton. Now, Liverpool are expected to return with an improved offer to secure the Gambian, according to the Daily Mail.

Minteh – ideal for Iraola, but a risk

It is little surprise that Minteh has been identified as an Iraola player. The Spanish coach loves explosive speed – as he showed with Antoine Semenyo and Eli Junior Kroupi at Bournemouth – and Minteh has exactly that.

In the 2025/26 season, Minteh was among the fastest players in the Premier League with a top speed of 36.11 km/h. Only players like Gabriel Martinelli (36.74), Mbeumo (36.34) and Haaland (36.20) were ahead of him.

But there is also a risk. Minteh is expected out until October after leg surgery – which means he will miss the start of the season.

Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler has previously praised the Gambian for his unpredictability, but also pointed out shortcomings:

“We have to work with him to continue to do unpredictable things offensively, but at the same time be more reliable defensively. He now understands more and more what has to work for the team,” Hürzeler said in March 2026.

Liverpool still in talks about Barcola

Liverpool have not given up on Bradley Barcola – they are still in talks with PSG about the Frenchman. But Mbaye was considered too expensive, and thus Minteh has become a main alternative.

If Liverpool secure both Barcola and Minteh, they will have a wide attacking arsenal: Barcola, Muñoz, 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha, Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo – although Gakpo could disappear if two new wingers come in.

However, relying on Barcola, Muñoz and Ngumoha for six weeks or more must be seen as a risk. Barcola has never played Premier League football, and Ngumoha is still only 17 years old.

Liverpool hope Minteh will be ready as soon as possible – if they end up getting their man. Until then, the hunt continues.
