Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea only needed nine words. Minutes after his old club lost 2-0 to Hull, the Spaniard posted a message that made United fans react.
It was a nightmare start for Manchester United in the season opener at the MKM Stadium. Newly-promoted Hull shocked the Red Devils with two goals from set-pieces – first by Semi Ajayi in the 17th minute, then by Nobel Mendy in the 38th minute.

United’s defence looked helpless, and offensively they created little – only five shots on goal in 90 minutes.
The fans reacted immediately. At full-time, thousands of United supporters left the stadium in protest before the players could come over to the away side to applaud.
De Gea’s nine-word jab
But it was another United profile that really got attention. David de Gea, who left the club three years ago, took to social media just before the final whistle:
“It’s not about how it starts, but how it ends.”
The post received 94,000 likes in its first two hours, and the comments section quickly filled up with United fans venting their frustration.
Carrick: “We have to learn from this”
Michael Carrick tried to calm his spirits after the game:
“We will continue to improve throughout the week and become stronger as a group. Today we cannot ignore – we have a lot to learn, but we will do so.
United received positive news earlier on Saturday when they agreed to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. But after the performance against Hull, it is clear that more transfer activity is needed before the window closes.
De Gea, now 35 years old, is still playing at the top level. He has a contract with Fiorentina until 2028 and is in full swing preparing for the Serie A opener against Roma on Monday night.
As he prepares for his start to the season, he still keeps an eye on his old club – and doesn’t hold back when things get tough.
