Marcus Rashford has sat down with Manchester United’s top management to talk about the future. The meeting could have major consequences – both for the player himself and for the club’s transfer plans.

The background is clear: Barcelona chose not to trigger the £26 million purchase option for the 28-year-old this summer. Thus, Rashford’s path forward is uncertain.

English media: “Antonio Nusa relevant for Liverpool”

Now all indications are that he will return to United. According to reports this week, he is expected to show up for pre-season training with the rest of the squad – ready for a fresh start in red.

Is there a way back?

At the same time, there is a buyout clause of £40 million, so a sale is still not ruled out. But more and more signals point in the direction of Rashford staying at Old Trafford for the 2026/27 season as well.

We often forget that this is about people’s livelihoods. Imagine yourself: You get a new boss who pushes you out of your job, you leave with a heavy heart, and then an old familiar manager is hired who says : “Come back.” Would you want others to judge you negatively for it?

What really happened in the meeting?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano gives us a behind-the-scenes look. Via the podcast Here We Go , he says:

Romano adds that the meeting opened the door for Rashford to stay and revive his career at Manchester United:

According to Romano, the intention from both parties is that Rashford will start training in red – with a new coach and a new chapter.

Not everyone is as enthusiastic

Among supporters and commentators, opinions are divided:

  • “Marcus Rashford clearly doesn’t want to go back to United – there’s no going back for him!”
  • “United only want top players they can buy for 30 million, so this is never going to happen. The transfer window has been terrible so far.”

Still: If the return becomes a fact, it will have major ripple effects.

What does this mean for the transition plans?

For months, it has been assumed that Rashford would be sold in the summer window. A return dramatically changes the club’s plans:

  • United have been on the hunt for a new winger – but that need could disappear if Rashford stays.
  • At the same time, United can no longer rely on removing Rashford’s huge weekly wage of £300,000 from the wage budget, which could weaken the room for manoeuvre.
  • But: If Rashford is sold, it would be £40 million more than what United originally expected from Barcelona. It can actually strengthen the club’s budget to bring in a replacement.

One thing is certain: Rashford’s future hangs in the balance – but perhaps the way back is still the most natural path for both him and the club.
