Mason Greenwood is about to become one of the real big dramas of the transfer window. Roma are set to secure the English star striker – but Atlético Madrid refuse to give up without a fight.

According to transfer expert Nicolò Schira, Roma are very close to a deal with Greenwood, who currently plays for Olympique Marseille. But the Spanish giants have decided to throw themselves into the bidding war – and they have no plans to back down.

Roma’s gigantic investment

Roma are willing to invest heavily in the 24-year-old. The offer will involve a contract that extends all the way to June 2031, with an annual salary of around five million euros. The transfer fee is said to be around €55 million – a staggering amount, but on par with what Greenwood has delivered at Marseille this season.

And for good reason: 26 goals and 11 assists across competitions have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after attackers. He has been Marseille’s absolute offensive beacon – a player who can decide games on his own, from several different positions in the attack.

For Roma, this is not just about bringing in a good player. It’s about getting the profile that can carry the team for several years to come.

Atlético will not give up

But Diego Simeone and Atlético Madrid have seen the same as Roma. They need a player who can raise the offensive level – especially one who can decide close games. Greenwood possesses precisely the qualities they are looking for: finishing ability, physicality, movement and the ability to score goals without relying on collective interaction.

The challenge for Atlético? The price. €55 million is a powerful investment for a club that has to balance its finances carefully. And the salary of five million euros a year must also fit into the structure and framework.

Still, the interest is there – and in Madrid they are aware that in order to compete for the best players, you have to dare to act offensively.

Marseille wins anyway

For Olympique Marseille, the situation is a dream. If both Roma and Atlético remain in the game, the French could push the price up further. Greenwood is one of the club’s most valuable assets – and with 26 goals and 11 assists to his name, he will only be sold for a very significant sum.

The player himself should already know that Roma offer a long contract and a good salary, but the opportunity to play in La Liga for a team like Atlético – under a coach like Simeone – can also be tempting.

What happens now?

The agreement will depend on several factors:

  • The clubs’ ability to agree on a transfer fee
  • Greenwood’s own wish
  • Atlético’s ability to match or improve Roma’s conditions

Marseille is not rushing anywhere. On the contrary: If the bidding war intensifies, they may be left with an even greater gain.

One thing is certain: Mason Greenwood is back on the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs. His season at Marseille has been too impressive to ignore. Roma are in the lead – but the transfer market has not yet had the last word.
