The Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund was fantastic for Atalanta, although a little fresh before he came to Old Trafford and after a period looked brilliant and exuberant in Serie A. The time for Manchester United was a downturn for all parties, not unlike many others who have been good both before and after.

On Monday, the Rasmus Højlund transfer could become official

All season, Rasmus Hojlund has been on loan from Manchester United to Napoli – with great success. Although it has long been taken for granted that the Dane will stay, it is still not certain that the transfer will be permanent. But that could change on Monday. Then the transfer could become a fact.

Rasmus Højlund’s career in brief

Rasmus Højlund (23) was born in Copenhagen and started his career at FC Copenhagen, before making the trip to Atalanta via Sturm Graz in Austria in 2022. In Bergamo, he really broke through with his physical attributes, speed and instinct in front of goal. That led to a grand transfer to Manchester United in the summer of 2023, worth around €79.8 million. At United, he struggled to live up to the high expectations during a difficult period for the club, but after a loan spell at Napoli, he has blossomed again – and now he is facing a possible permanent deal.

€44 million purchase option – if Napoli reach the Champions League

As several media outlets and transfer journalists, including Fabrizio Romano, have described, the loan deal includes a €44 million purchase option. Napoli must take advantage of it if the club qualifies for the Champions League.

And that could happen on Monday.

Long nose to English experts

If Napoli beat Como on Saturday night, and AS Roma also lose points against Fiorentina on Monday night, the Neapolitans will be mathematically ready for a top-four finish in Serie A.

Rasmus Hojlund has had a good season at Napoli, and that has also made English pundits such as Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen hope for a comeback to Manchester United. Ryan Giggs, for example, said that he would like to see Hojlund get a second chance at Old Trafford, because the Dane was unlucky during his time at the club.

United powerless – contract and buyout clause await

But as expected, Napoli secure a place in next year’s Champions League, Manchester United are completely powerless. Everything points in the direction of that place being secured soon.

Rasmus Højlund will then get a contract that lasts until the summer of 2030, and from the summer of 2027 it will contain a buyout clause of NOK 637 million for foreign clubs.
