It’s no surprise that Wolverhampton manager Gary O’Neil is sacked, after all, the Premier League club have only managed to pick up 9 points from 16 rounds.

After yesterday’s home defeat at Molineux Stadium 1 – 2 against Ipswich Town, the patience of the board was over. After the game, the manager was frustrated by a number of player errors: “That kind of error just can’t happen at this level”

Manager Gary O’Neil has been sacked after Saturday’s heavy defeat to bottom rivals Ipswich. – Ipswich Town are managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s former assistant at Manchester United and good friend Kieran McKenna. Hence the good atmosphere.

O’Neil took over as manager of Wolves in the summer of 2023, and last season led the club to 14th place in the Premier League. He has previously had a background as head coach at Bournemouth.

Wolves will thus be the third Premier League club this autumn to sack a head coach. In the past, Manchester United got rid of Erik ten Hag, while Leicester City sacked Steve Cooper. Ruben Amorim and Ruud van Nistelrooy have come in as replacements.

So who will replace the former Bournemouth boss at Molineux? At the time of writing, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the bookies favourite to take the role. Since being sacked by Manchester United in November 2021, Solskjaer has rejected several job offers, including two proposals from clubs in the Saudi Pro League. (He, like most others in Norway, is not so fond of bloody dictatorships)

He also turned down the chance to become national team manager of Denmark, according to the Danish magazine Tipsbladet, but his attendance at Saturday’s match between Wolves and Ipswich made his tongues wag.

That said, Solskjaer’s trip to Wolverhampton seems to have been on the calendar for a while, according to journalist Andy Mitten, who recently interviewed the Norwegian.

“Don’t read too much into the fact that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is at Wolves,” Mitten wrote.

“It’s a long-planned trip. He has traveled to England with his family. He’s a football nerd. And he wants to watch Ipswich as his friends Kieran and Martyn are coaches. And Ole’s son (he’s with all the kids) are Ipswich fans.”

That’s right. Solskjaer’s son, Elijah, is a big fan of newly promoted Ipswich Town.

When a fan questioned the motive behind Elijah’s support for The Tractor Boys, Mitten replied: “He [Solskjaer] told me a story about how Ipswich played in his city in the 70s – so there are a lot of Ipswich fans in Kristiansund.”

Still, Solskjaer leads the way at 2/1 to replace O’Neil ahead of David Moyes, Carlos Corberan, Sergio Conceicao and Steve Cooper says a collection of booking companies.
