Liverpool secured a 2-0 win over Como in their last friendly before their Premier League opener against Newcastle United. But as the first team prepares for the start of the season, one player is definitely on his way away – after 834 days in oblivion.

Andoni Iraola has been assessing the squad carefully over the summer, and while fans are still hoping for new signings, the reality is that someone has to leave. One of them is Stefan Bajcetic – the Spaniard who was once seen as Liverpool’s future in midfield.

Bajcetic ready for Getafe

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 21-year-old midfielder is now on his way to La Liga club Getafe. The transfer marks the end of a long and painful period for the player who last played for Liverpool 834 days ago – against Tottenham Hotspur in a 4-2 victory.

That was when he was 18 years old, and everything looked bright.

The records that were shattered – and the damage that changed everything

Bajcetic broke through with a bang in the 2022/23 season. In his Champions League debut against Ajax, he became the youngest Liverpool player ever in the tournament – beating Billy Koumetio’s record. He seemed to be the perfect successor to Fabinho, impressing greatly as the anchor of the midfield.

But then came the nightmare.

In March 2023, he suffered a serious adductor injury – and his career as a first-team player at Liverpool was effectively over. He only played three games the following season, and the last one was 834 days ago.

Loans, disappointments and standstill

In order to get playing time, Bajcetic was sent on loan to Red Bull Salzburg in 2024/25. There he experienced that the club lost the league gold for the first time in ten years – Sturm Graz broke the streak.

The next stop was Las Palmas in La Liga. It ended in relegation.

Last season, Bajcetic stayed on Merseyside – but didn’t play a single game for Liverpool.

New start at Getafe

Now it looks like the 21-year-old will finally have the opportunity to revive his career. A move to Getafe in La Liga could be just what he needs – a chance to remind the football world why Jürgen Klopp once called him the future.

For Liverpool fans, it is a sad end to a promising chapter. For Bajcetic, it’s a new beginning.
