If you bet that the reigning Premier League champions will win against newly promoted Coventry, you will not get particularly high odds. – A home win here is what most would call “bankers”, especially after captain Martin Ødegaard shows exceptional form or all the love he has been showered with in connection with the World Cup.
But, as always, matches must be played before the points are awarded. – In our Live service you can follow highlights from the match and after it is finished check out all the statistics.

Preview: Arsenal – Coventry
Coventry boss Frank Lampard admits that there is “no more difficult place to travel” than Arsenal – but assures that his team is looking forward to the chance to pull off a huge surprise on opening night.
The Sky Blues cruised to the Championship title last season and have spent large sums of money in the transfer window. Caleb Yirenkyi, Sidiki Cherif and Taiwo Awoniyi are among the newcomers, while Carl Rushworth and Gus Hamer have returned to the club.

Lampard stresses that the core of the promoted team deserves the chance in the Premier League:
“I’m very excited to be here and get a club that has been outside the Premier League for 25 years, back to where it belongs. We want to challenge – and we want to do well.
“I want the players to go in with faith. There’s a lot of energy among players who have never played at this level, but are desperate to play – and who deserve to be here. I’m talking about Ephron Mason-Clark, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Matt Grimes – players who have worked for a long time in the Championship with the goal of reaching the Premier League.
“You can’t start with a more difficult place to travel than Arsenal.
Arsenal – clear favourites
The challenge for Arsenal is to defend the title they won for the first time in 22 years. With the 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield, they have already sent a powerful message to the rest of the league.
Leandro Trossard and Christian Nørgaard have left, but Bruno Guimarães and Christos Tzolis appear to be upgrades to an already formidable squad.
Mikel Arteta demands no break:
“When I look into the eyes of my players, I see the fire, the desire and the will to get better every single day. That’s the only thing I care about.
About the title defense, he adds:
“It’s an opportunity we have in front of us, and we’re very aware of what it takes to deliver. I feel the ambition, the will, the ability and the conviction that we can do it.
Team news
Arsenal will have to do without William Saliba and Jurriën Timber. Declan Rice could come in for Myles Lewis-Skelly in midfield, while Bruno Guimarães is a doubt after he had to go off after the first half in the Community Shield.
Coventry will have to do without top scorer Haji Wright (17 goals in the Championship) – he is out for up to three months with a thigh injury. Cherif or Awoniyi can make their debut in attack. Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni are fit after minor injuries.
Predicted starting line-ups
Arsenal (4-3-3):
Raya – White, Gabriel, Mosquera, Calafiori – Guimarães, Rice, Ødegaard – Saka, Tzolis, Havertz
Coventry (4-2-3-1):
Rushworth – Van Ewijk, Thomas, Amenda, Dasilva – Yirenkyi, Grimes, Torp – Tchaouna, Thomas-Asante, Awoniyi
Official line-ups will be announced 20-40 minutes before kick-off.
Form and statistics
- Last time Arsenal and Coventry met in the Premier League: February 2001 (1–0 to Arsenal at Highfield Road)
- Arsenal have won their last four season openers
- Coventry’s last Premier League opener (2000) ended in a 3–1 defeat to Middlesbrough
- Arsenal have won 17 of their last 18 games against newly promoted teams, with the exception being a 2-2 draw with Sunderland last year
Our Prediction
A tough opening for Coventry – especially with several new players to be integrated. Arsenal should have too much quality, and can crush the Sky Blues if they get an early goal.
Tips: Arsenal 4–0 Coventry
