Chelsea star Marc Cucurella earlier this month criticized his own club – openly. The criticism was particularly focused on Chelsea having invested and invested heavily in younger talents, with the Spaniard calling for more experience and weight to be in a position to fight for titles. Liam Rosenior was brought in on January 6, after the atmosphere between the club management and Enzo Maresca was so tense that it could not continue. Rosenior has previously managed Hull City and late Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg, but has zero experience from the biggest games. In the Premier League, every game is big, now Chelsea supporters are suffering through the latter part of the season.
The Premier League needs a Chelsea that fights right up there, but the London club seems to lack a foundation. Or is it the expectation that Chelsea will fight for the titles every single season that is destroying? Rosenior was brought in for the long haul, but the Chelsea owners have shown with the sacking of Lampard, Tuchel, Potter, Pochettino and Maresca since 2021, that the long-term does not apply to the coaches.

On Saturday, the Blues suffered a disgraceful 0-1 defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. This means that six of the last seven games have ended in defeat. At the same time, Chelsea have failed to score in four Premier League games in a row. This is the first time in 28 years that this has happened.
Liam Rosenior is nevertheless exuberantly optimistic on behalf of his own job.
-I feel 100 percent support. They (the management) have supported me in our daily conversations. The sports directors involved have been fantastic in their support for both me and the team. We completely agree that we have to win football matches now. That doesn’t mean we’re also trying to give this club sustained success in the long term,” the Chelsea coach told Sky Sports.
Hmm. Either Chelsea have changed their strategy and will actually stand by the managerial choice, or Liam Rosenior has misunderstood the whole situation. Because no former Chelsea manager has “survived in the job” after the performances of the last few months.
We’ll have to bet that it’s the first. Chelsea now need a touch of continuity to build lasting success.
