When it became clear Barcelona had decided to sign Anthony Gordon, the Newcastle management were eager to make a deal directly after the Premier League season was over. The Barca management jumped at the opportunity and pulled up £70 million for the England international. Three games into the World Cup, Scottish legend Graeme Souness believes Barcelona may have made a real mistake.
Gordon started England’s first two games at the World Cup, but was benched in the final group game against Panama. Many experts in the media criticized the winger’s ineffective performance in the 0-0 draw against Ghana.

“It’s fair to say that they’ve seen their new winger Anthony Gordon for £70 million in England’s opening games and wondered what they’ve bought,” Souness writes in The Telegraph.
“If Gordon shows up in Barcelona and plays as conservatively as he did against Croatia and Ghana, he won’t stay in Catalonia for long. Lamine Yamal is the template for a Barcelona winger. We all saw what he did against Saudi Arabia in their second game, where he rushed on and attacked the back post to score a goal. You’re fooling yourself if you don’t think that everyone around Barcelona, from the fans to the media to the players, is watching and saying, ‘If Yamal does that, what does Gordon do?’, that’s coming from Souness.
