Then came the confidence of the German Football Association in 2023. Nagelsmann was to lead Die Mannschaft into a new era of the major titles. Now it’s over, as the Swedes say it.

After Germany’s lead-heavy World Cup exit after losing to Paraguay in the round of 16, it was a still battle-ready Naglesmann who was asked about the rest of his contract run until 2028: “I want to continue. I’m ready if that’s what the federation wants. If they don’t want it, they can speak up.”

“Everyone” knew that there would be no continuation with Nagelsmann at the helm. He got to test himself in the European Championship on home soil to a quarter-final loss to Spain, he got to test himself in the World Cup with a round of 16 against Paraguay.

On Friday morning, both German Sky Sports and Bild report that Nagelsmann has now resigned. In other words, there is room for talks with a very clear Jürgen Klopp.
