Morten Hjulmand led Sporting to the convincing turnaround in the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-0 loss at Aspmyra against Bodø/Glimt. The Danish captain pumped faith and energy into the squad, a mentality that sunk Bodø/Glimt 5-0 in Lisbon. After three seasons at Sporting Lisbon, the time has come for the exit of Morten Hjulmand.

The club’s captain was close to a transfer last year, with Manchester United and Juventus being the hottest suitors. The midfielder chose to stay with Sporting for another season, but now the 26-year-old is facing a change of scene.

Danish Bold reports that Atlético Madrid have previously submitted bids of 30 million euros, but that is far from the amount Sporting Lisbon will accept.

According to Spanish AS, Hjulmand has agreed with Atlético Madrid on a contract and an annual salary package of 6 million euros, but Bold believes that a deal is not imminent. Sporting are demanding more than 40 million euros, where they have secured a buyout clause of 80 million euros in Hjulmand’s contract.

Sporting Lisbon have already signed Silas Andersen in the summer transfer window, who could easily be a direct replacement for Morten Hjulmand in Sporting Lisbon’s central midfield. So the Portuguese are ready, but Atletico Madrid will have to come up with a far more convincing offer.
